• Which processor is right for my project?

  For hosting a small number of websites with low database demands, we suggest opting for processors of the Intel i3. It's important to note that this option is not suitable for high-demand platforms like Moodle.

  In cases where you intend to host a limited number of sites with high database requirements, or a larger number of sites with normal or low demands, the recommended choice is Intel i5. This option is ideal for managing, for example, up to 3 Moodle sites, with the possibility of additionally including more sites with common characteristics.

  For projects that involve several sites with intensive database use or those that require managing a large number of sites in general, the recommendation is to opt for processors in the Intel i7 or Intel i9 range, since they offer the performance needed to support these demands.

  If you're going to use Proxmox for virtualization, we suggest the CPU with the highest number of cores/threads so you can better distribute processing capacity across each VM.

  Likewise, we recommend that you always check the requirements specified by the developers of the applications you plan to use. This precaution can prevent future inconveniences and guarantee smooth integration.

• How much memory is enough?

  To guarantee optimal performance for your websites, we suggest the following RAM configurations based on consumption and the number of hosted sites:

  Low consumption sites/applications:

  • Linux: 4 GB of RAM or more is recommended.
  • Windows: Ideally, 8 GB of RAM or more, although for one or two sites, 4 GB may be sufficient.

  To host more than 5 sites/applications with low to medium consumption:

  • Linux and Windows: 8 GB of RAM or more is advised.

  For more than 10 low-consumption sites/applications or some high-consumption sites (e.g.: 2 Moodle installations):

  • General: 16 GB of RAM or more is suggested.

  High resource demand sites/applications:

  • For platforms like virtual classrooms or large news portals, with more than 1,000 simultaneous visits, 32 GB of RAM or more is recommended to ensure a smooth, uninterrupted experience.

  Virtualization with Proxmox:

  • For virtualizations with Proxmox we suggest a base of 32 GB but if you're going to manage multiple VMs you'll need more memory to distribute among each VM you create.

  Likewise, we recommend that you always check the requirements specified by the developers of the applications you plan to use. This precaution can prevent future inconveniences and guarantee smooth integration.

• What's the best combination of storage units?

  When configuring your dedicated server, you have the option to select up to 6 disk units. Combining these disks lets you customize their function according to your specific needs. Here's a brief explanation of each possibility:

  • Extend Capacity: This option allows you to increase your server's total storage space. Additional disks are used to expand capacity, allowing you to store more data.

  • Backup: Selecting disks for backup gives you a security solution, where important data is duplicated on disks specifically designated for recovery in case of data loss.

  • Raid 0 (Stripe): This configuration increases performance by distributing data evenly across two or more disks. However, it doesn't offer redundancy; if one disk fails, data from all disks is lost.

  • Raid 1 (Mirror): Provides redundancy by copying the same data to two different disks. If one of the disks fails, the other can continue operating without data loss, ensuring greater protection.

  • Raid 10 (Stripe of Mirrors): Combines the advantages of Raid 0 and Raid 1. It requires at least four disks and offers both increased performance and redundancy, making it an excellent option for critical applications that demand high availability and speed.

  The choice will depend on your specific requirements for performance, capacity, and data security.

  Likewise, whatever combination you choose, don't forget to add at least one disk in Backup mode.

• What transfer and bandwidth does the dedicated server include?

  Our dedicated server service includes unlimited monthly transfer and a initial bandwidth of 100 Mbit/s dedicated and symmetric (outgoing traffic equals incoming), which can be increased up to 1,000 Mbit/s.

  You can also test by downloading files from 100 MB and 1 GB.

• Is it possible to scale the resources of a Dedicated Server?

  Yes, all our servers have the ability to modify their resources, so you can always cover your projects' needs as they grow.

• Can I connect two (or more) dedicated servers to each other?

  Yes, we can make LAN connections between two or more dedicated servers.

  Depending on your needs:

  • To connect two servers to each other you need to purchase an additional network card for each server, and request the interconnection via help desk.

  • If you need to connect more than two dedicated servers together, in addition to purchasing an additional network card for each server, you'll need to purchase a switch. Then, request the interconnection via help desk.

  This gives you the possibility of having an infrastructure as complex as your project requires.

• What's the right Operating System for my project?

  It's vital to understand that the choice between a Linux or Windows server isn't related to the operating system you use on your own computer. The decision should be based on the applications and technologies you plan to implement on your server:

  • Linux: Ideal if you plan to use applications like WordPress, Joomla, Prestashop, or work with technologies like MySQL, PHP, Perl, Node.js, Python, etc.

  • Windows Server: Recommended for running specific Microsoft applications that require ASP, .NET, or Microsoft SQL Server.

  • Proxmox: The option to consider if you need virtualization to deploy and manage virtual machines or containers for your applications.

• What does the managed service include?

• Where is the data center physically located?

  The servers are hosted in one of our four own datacenters in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. This means lower latency for LATAM region clients and that processed data doesn't leave the continent, which can simplify regulatory compliance in certain cases.

• Do you have protection against DoS or DDoS attacks?

  At DonWeb we have several layers of protection to mitigate denial-of-service attacks such as: SYN, ICMP and UDP flood, Ping of Death, Smurf, etc. Also those attacks that try to saturate our network's bandwidth.

  In case of severe, large-scale attacks, the mitigation systems located upstream, at the level of our connectivity providers (carriers), will be activated. These are activated automatically and within the first 5 minutes of the attack starting.

  If the attacks are smaller in scale and directed at specific servers, the mitigation systems within our datacenters will be activated. These filtering systems have rules that are updated periodically and work automatically.

  Additionally, our staff assigned to the Network Operation Center monitor the networks 24x7x365 and will act promptly against any anomaly detected in traffic.

  Also, beyond DDoS, there are many different types of cyber attacks that can affect your site or application. That's why we recommend:

  • Using SSL certificates on all connections possible.
  • Keep your server and application software up to date.
  • Use strong, secure passwords at all levels of the systems.
  • Configure the firewall as restrictively as possible.
  • Use the services of Cloudflare, since they have a Web Application Firewall (WAF). Even their free service provides a very complete and efficient layer of protection.

• Do the servers have backup solutions?

  The security of our users' information is a priority for DonWeb, which is why we always recommend contracting an additional hard disk, in Backup mode, for each server you have.

  If you require it, request it and our technicians will be happy to configure your server to store your information backups on that disk.

  If you already have a Dedicated Server that doesn't have a Backup disk, contact our advisors to add it today.

• How long does server activation take?

  Dedicated server activation will begin immediately after our administrative team confirms your payment. This process includes implementing all the necessary configurations to get your server up and running.

  The estimated time for activation varies depending on when payment is confirmed:

  • Weekdays (Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM): the server will be activated within 24 hours after payment confirmation.
  • During weekends, holidays or after 5 PM on business days: the server will be activated within a maximum of 72 hours.

  It's worth noting that if you require special configurations, such as adding disks or a balanced infrastructure, the activation process could extend up to 72 hours. However, we'll do our best to minimize this time and ensure your server is available as soon as possible.

  As soon as your server is active, you'll receive an email with all the necessary information to access it.

• What software can I install on my dedicated server?

  By choosing a Dedicated Server, you'll get full root permissions (or admin on Windows), giving you the freedom to install the software your project needs.

  It's important to remember that any software or application you install on DonWeb servers must have its respective usage license, thus ensuring you're in full compliance with copyright and licensing regulations. Likewise, operating system licenses are provided by us.

• I have a Microsoft license. Can I use it for my server?

  Yes, of course!

  At DonWeb you have the option to purchase licenses for Microsoft products such as: Windows Server, SQL Server, and Terminal Server in a simple way and at a very convenient price. However, if you already have some of these licenses you can use them on your server. Keep in mind that for this, we'll request the following documentation:

  • Copy of the license / EULA
  • Purchase invoice
  • Note releasing Donweb.com from liability for its use

• Does the Dedicated Server include an SSL certificate?

  Yes, our servers include an SSL certificate.

  Depending on the installed software, there are different alternatives to use a free Let's Encrypt SSL, or a commercial SSL certificate.

  In the tutorials you can see how to install and configure your SSL certificates, depending on whether you use a Control Panel or not.

• What's the difference between a Cloud Server and a Dedicated Server?

  A dedicated server is a physical server exclusively used by each client, thus allowing for better control over its hardware and software resources, while a Cloud Server is a virtual machine that runs within a "group of servers" that share resources (CPU, RAM, Disks and Network).
